During her time in the Rooted Residency, Shoen created a group dance theater piece which explores the intersection of extremes, dark and light, perpetrator and victim, sane and insane, beautiful and horrific, in order to spin out the entanglement of such binaries so that something else entirely may be revealed. By experimenting with the Human Body as Icon and implementing her own experience of mental illness and psychosis, Shoen hopes to investigate what can get trapped in our cells and how we can coax it out in order to find freedom and connection to ourselves, others, and the world around us.
